Queenstown is known as the Adventure Capital of New Zealand and there is a vast array of adventure and outdoor activities available. The Accommodation

  • there are four Luxury Suites – 2 in the main lodge and 2 out in the garden. Each 72 sq metre suite has a lounge and separate bedroom, full bathroom, private balcony and open fire

  • one smaller Lodge Room, in the main lodge, has a full bathroom and private balcony. It interconnects with a Deluxe Suite for a larger family space

  • the seven 76 sq metre Deluxe Suites all have glorious views of the lake and mountains, a full bathroom, lounge area and separate bedroom. Six of these are out in the gardens and one is in the main lodge

  • the Owners Cottage is a superb 460 sq metre luxury hideaway, separate from the main lodge. It has four suites, which can be taken as a 2 or 4 bedroom option, a large central living area, superb fully equipped kitchen, private suite balconies and an outdoor jacuzzi. All rooms have fabulous views of the Remarkables Range.

The Main Lodge

  • there are several shared spaces allowing plenty of opportunities for socialising, enjoying some peace and quiet or soaking up the views. These include upper and lower lounges looking out to the mountains, a library, sitting room and large outdoor patio

  • dining options include the lodge dining room, the sheltered outdoor dining area and the Remarkables Patio

  • the lodge offers world-class cuisine managed by Head Chef Jonathan Rogers, who has considerable experience with the New Zealand style

  • the on-site spa offers a range of holistic treatments including massages, facials, hand and foot treatments and body care

  • a heated outdoor pool and fully equipped gym provide plenty of scope to exercise and relax

The Activities

  • there are several championship golf courses within a 30 minute drive of Matakauri Lodge – Jacks Point and The Hills both have stunning alpine settings and challenging courses

  • there is world-class fly fishing for brown and rainbow trout in the many glass-clear rivers of the Southland, Otago and Fiordland areas. Sight and stalk fishing is exceptional and heli-fishing is also a popular option

  • there is excellent sightseeing in the greater area, if you can draw yourself away from the views out your window. The Te Wahipounamu World Heritage Area, Fiordland National Park and the ranges of the Queenstown and Wanaka regions offer endless options

  • the Queenstown Winter Festival in July heralds the start of the ski season. There are many great ski fields in the nearby mountains offering skiing, snowboarding and some off-piste skiing
